Custom Home Builder Question Checklist

You’ll commonly hear that it’s a wise move to write down a list of questions for a potential custom home builder prior to selecting one to design and construct your dream home. But, what are some of the questions that are good to ask? Below is a list of some sample questions that are great starting points for any conversation with a custom home builder.

Experience
·How many years have you been building custom homes?
·What size homes do you typically build?
·Have you had any experience building a home of this size before?
·Are you a member of any industry associations or organizations?
·Do you volunteer or actively participate with any community groups or organizations?

Reputation
·What are your company’s strengths when it comes to building custom homes? What are your weaknesses?
·May I have a list of references that I can call to see samples of your work?
·Why should I choose you out of all the other custom home builders in our area?
·Has your company received any awards, honors or made any significant achievements recently?
·May we request information from your banks regarding your company’s credit history?
·Has your company ever failed to complete a job? If so, why?

Relationships
·How long have you worked with your subcontractors?
·How do you handle communication between homeowners, builders and subcontractors?
·How do you handle conflict amongst subcontractors or homeowners?
·How often and through what means will I receive updates from you throughout the building process?

Procedures
·Will you be on site during the construction of the home? How many hours do you typically spend each week supervising individual projects?
·Do you have any architects on staff? If not, do you have some you’d recommend?
·Are you willing to look at the property we are considering buying for our home and offer suggestions, opinions or recommendations?
·Do you work with an interior/exterior designer? If not, is there one you’d recommend?
·Do you have a formal building process that you use on all homes?
·Do you provide a detailed schedule for each phase of the building process?
·How will I know when selections should be made?
