Winter Home Care Tips

Being proactive is the most effective way to prevent damage to your home during the winter months. Follow these helpful tips to maximize energy cost savings and protect your investment.

Inspect Your Doors & Windows
Take a look at all the windows and doors on the exterior of your house. Replace any broken or damaged window frames before the temperature dips. If you see any exposed parts or large gaps, you may want to consider caulking your windows or weather stripping your doors.

Check Your HVAC System
Remove any flammable objects within close proximity of your furnace and change your furnace filter.  We recommend replacing your filter every month for optimal efficiency.  Once you’ve swapped out the old furnace filter, call a local HVAC professional to schedule an inspection. Having your ducts thoroughly cleaned and your furnace inspected by a professional can help maintain proper functionality and avoid costly damage to your HVAC system.

Protect Your Pipes
Poor insulation and low thermostats are two of the main causes of frozen pipes.  Fortunately, there are steps you can take to protect your property from major damage that results from bursting pipes. Thoroughly inspect, repair and insulate your pipes before the temperature dips below 32°F. Make note of any changes in the condition of your plumbing before and after the season to keep track of reoccurring problems or deterioration.

Find Your First Aid Kit
Winter storms can hit without warning and cause irreparable harm. Stay informed and get prepared before the inclement weather hits. If you have a first aid kit in the house, make sure it’s easily accessible to you and your family members. Be sure to replenish your stock before it gets cold outside. In addition to your first-aid kit, have the following items on hand in case of a power outage due to severe winter weather:

  • Candles and water-proof matches
  • High-energy/non-perishable food
  • Extra medicine and toiletry necessities
  • Heating fuel
  • Alternative heating source (fireplace, space heater, etc.)
  • Working smoke detector and fire extinguisher

Organize Your Outdoor Areas
Don’t let all of those landscaping hours go to waste! Prune your trees to prevent injuries and consider bringing some of your more sensitive plants inside before it gets chilly outside.  Move or trim tall trees that are located within close proximity of your house. Keeping branches away from your house will protect your property when powerful storms blow through.
